Winterthur Gardens is a Dupont estate, and is like a cousin to Longwood Gardens, which is just 10 minutes away. Strolling though the expansive gardens feels a bit like walking through a scene from Downtown Abbey. If you live near the Brandywine Valley, Winterthur is a must-visit destination.

For this Wilmington, Delaware family photo session we choose Winterthur because the family treasures their membership and has created many memories exploring the children’s garden. Their children loved romping through the fields of tall grass this spring and wandering the trails together.
Tips for Visiting Winterthur Gardens with Kids
If you plan on bringing children with you to visit Winterthur, I recommend planning on at least 2-3 hours. It’s good to have a stroller or wagon for the long walk. Even if your children are a little older the trails are extensive and they might tire before getting back to the car. If you’re a member you can catch a ride on the tram if you are there during business hours!
If I’m with my children I like to follow the map near the parking lot to walk straight back to the children’s garden area. I recommend packing a picnic lunch and blanket, plenty of water, and bringing books to read under the shade of the giant trees. My boys also love to play chess. Winterthur feels so charming like you are stepping back in time. Read A Secret Garden with the kids and let them frolic through all the little delightful nooks near the play house and mushroom misters!
