Lewes DE Beach Photo Sessions at Cape Henlopen State Park
As a Lewes DE family photographer, many of my favorite beach sessions take place at Cape Henlopen State Park. The park is expansive, and even when crowded there is always a hidden away stretch of coastline and dunes to explore. There’s just something magical about the combination of dunes, open shoreline, and soft evening light that makes for the most perfect family photo backdrop.
I also love family photo sessions in Cape Henlopen because there is so much greenery! The pine trees stay green year round, and offer shade for my morning and early evening sessions.
Family Photos in Cape Henlopen State Park
This session in Cape Henlopen is the perfect example. We started off all together to capture those more posed family portraits, but soon enough the children were running ahead, giving mom some extra snuggle time with the baby of the family. That’s always the goal here—giving you enough guidance to feel confident, but enough freedom to capture for real moments to unfold.

When is the best time of year for beach photos in Lewes?
Late spring through early fall is ideal, but each season offers something slightly different:
- May–June: Secretly my fave time of year! Fewer crowds, cooler evenings, fewer bugs!!
- July–August: Classic beach energy—longer days, warmer water, more movement, classic summer sunsets
- September–early October: Often the sweet spot for beach sessions! Warm tones, fewer crowds, and incredible golden light that sets earlier (easier for babies!)

What time of day is best for beach sessions?
Beach sessions are almost always either close to sunrise, or two different evening time slots. I always offer golden hour, and the the hour before golden hour, which works well for families with young children.
Morning sessions capture the sun rising over the ocean, which is magical. Sunrise sessions work well for families with young children that are comfortable rising early! Usually we are starting between 5:30am-6:30am depending on the time of year. I always start sunrise sessions close to the water for the softest light, and then move you to the dunes and sandy trails for shade as the sun comes up for the day.
Sunset sessions are scheduled for the last two hours of light in the day. The earlier hour is brighter light, which makes for epic candid shots. The true golden hour time slot is when the light starts to soften on the dunes and the beach begins to empty out of tourists. The water will stay bright until the very last few minutes before sunset, so we will spend the beginning of our sessions on the sandy, wooded paths and the dunes before exploring the rock jetty and water.
For families with younger kids, I’ll help you plan timing carefully so it feels manageable and best for your routines. If it’s a cloudy day, we may have to move your session time around to ensure we have enough light.

How far in advance should we book a Lewes DE beach session?
For summer and early fall sessions in Lewes, I recommend booking:
- 3–4 months in advance for peak season dates
- Earlier (winter/early spring) if you have specific vacation plans
Beach sessions are limited to weekdays only to avoid crowds and traffic on weekends (especially at Cape Henlopen State Park). I have a few wonderful associates that work with me, so if I am booked up, you may still be able to work with me via one of my associate photographers. I still do all the client management and editing, so you are ensured an amazing experience start to finish!

What should we wear for Lewes beach photos?
I always encourage my clients to choose clothing that feels like you, but perhaps slightly more intentional.
For beach sessions, I typically recommend:
- Lightweight fabrics that move easily in the wind
- A mix of tones (not all matching, not all neutral)
- Casual, but elevated pieces—think chambray, chunky knit cotton, searsucker, linen, gingham, etc.
Lately, I’m seeing families lean into more personality—primary colors, fun stripes, playful combinations, less of the overly muted palette – which adds a lot of interest and color against the blue sky, greenery and dunes in Lewes, DE!
I am always available to help style you before your session so you’re not guessing!

What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate?
Beach sessions are only rescheduled for true storms or unsafe conditions.
Cloud cover is actually often ideal—it softens the light even further. If needed, we can adjust timing slightly the same day to work around weather conditions.

What makes Cape Henlopen such a good location?
Cape Henlopen State Park offers a combination that’s hard to find anywhere else on the Delaware coast:
- Wide, open shoreline (this means lots of space for movement)
- Natural sweeping dunes that add depth and texture
- One of the best spots of sunrise in the area!
- One of the few beach spots that has some shade when needed
- TONS of variety in natural elements- dunes, trails, bay, lighthouse, ocean, nature center, rock jetties

What is the experience like during a session?
My approach is rooted in movement, play and connection. I’ve been doing family portraits for so many years I am able to capture a lot of variety of both posed family photos along with plenty of guided candids. There’s no expectation for everyone to stand still and smile at the camera for an hour. Instead, I will lead you into opportunities for connection that photograph beautifully. I guide you into simple movement—walking, holding hands, letting kids lead for a moment—then I step back and observe. The best images tend to happen in those in-between seconds.
The goal is a gallery that really feels like your family. Warning, your kids may get wet. Your husband may tell you it was actually fun.
