Best Locations for Family Photos in Chester County, PA (2026 Guide)

If you’re planning family photos in Chester County, PA, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is choosing the right location. The setting shapes not just how your images look, but how your session feels- whether your kids can move freely, whether the light is soft and flattering, and whether the overall experience feels relaxed and playful. Today I am sharing some of the best Chester County family photo locations.

As a Chester County family photographer, I’m always guiding families toward locations that allow for natural connection rather than stiff posing. The goal isn’t just a beautiful backdrop—it’s a space where your family can settle in and be yourselves. My favorite location will always be your home or backyard, but for those families looking for options away from their own homes, below is a comprehensive guide to the best locations for family photos in Chester County, organized by style so you can choose what fits your family best.

Open Field & Nature Preserves (Best for My Style of Playful, Unposed Photos in Chester County)

If you’re drawn to images that feel playful, connected, and full of movement, open fields are an easy choice- these give us space to explore, move around and interact.

Top Locations:

  • Okehocking Preserve
  • White Clay Creek
  • Private Property/farmland

These locations offer:

  • wide open fields and tall grasses
  • soft, directional light at sunset
  • space for kids to run and explore

This is where sessions tend to feel the most “unposed”—less about standing still and more about interacting naturally.

Best time: due to the lack of shade at open nature preserves, the best timing is golden hour (about 60–90 minutes before sunset)

Gardens & Estates (Refined and colorful Chester County family photo location)

If you love a slightly more elevated aesthetic, local gardens provide manicured beauty while still allowing for natural interaction.

Top Locations:

  • Longwood Gardens
  • Winterthur
  • Bellevue State Park

These locations offer:

  • curated landscapes and seasonal blooms
  • clean, intentional backdrops
  • a more refined overall look

I still approach these sessions with movement and flexibility so they don’t feel stiff or overly posed.

Best time: weekday mornings or evenings (to avoid crowds)

Important notices: Permits are required in advance at Longwood Gardens and cost $250. Longwood has set times for photo sessions- 10:30am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm. I usually prefer the morning time slot or the afternoon in the fall. Most local gardens have permit fees and require advance reservations.

Longwood is a national treasure, but we are lucky enough to have other beautiful gardens in the Chester County area.

Bellevue State Park also offers a beautiful backdrop, especially in the spring when all the flowers are in bloom. This location is best on weekdays at sunset or early morning. Worth the short drive to Wilmington, Delaware from southern Chester County.

Charming Towns & Texture (Story-Telling Sessions)

For something a little different, town locations bring in color and personality. Let’s grab ice cream or stop into your favorite coffee shop and explore your hometown!

Top Locations:

  • Downtown West Chester
  • Kennett Square

These settings include:

  • brick pathways, storefronts, and alleyways
  • historic charm
  • opportunities for more interactive, walking-based sessions

They’re especially great for older kids who can enjoy a favorite treat in town and capture their favorite spots where you live.

Best for: families who want a mix of candid + environmental storytelling
Best time: early morning or just before sunset

Unique Chester County Locations For Something Different

If you want to add a little personality to your session, these locations offer something unexpected.

Options to Consider:

  • Covered bridges throughout Chester County
  • Springton Manor Farm (barn + fields)
  • Unionville / Chadds Ford countryside roads or fairgrounds

These locations bring:

  • architectural interest
  • rural Chester County charm
  • variety within a single session

How to Choose the Right Location for Your Family

The “best” location isn’t about everything in the background, it’s truly about what is the best fit for your family’s energy and personality.

When I guide families, I consider:

  • your children’s energy levels
  • how much movement vs structure you prefer
  • the overall feel you’re drawn to (refined, playful, quiet, etc.)

This is something we always decide together so your session feels aligned from the beginning.

Remember, your home and private property are always my favorite session locations- always meaningful, and children are always more comfortable at home! This family with teens enjoyed showing me around their beautiful Kennett Square property, complete with ATVs and dirt bikes.

This Chadds Ford family loved exploring their expansive yard where their kids were most comfortable for their fall family photo session.

Chester County offers incredible variety, but what makes a session truly successful isn’t just the location—it’s how everything comes together.

Honest photographs to help us remember.

As a mother of three and a Delaware family photographer for nearly two decades, I know how quickly these seasons pass—and how much effort it can feel like to even attempt family photos.

My sessions are guided with intention and designed for real families: kids who move, parents who worry, and moments that don’t need to be fully controlled to be meaningful. I focus on presence over perfection, creating images that reflect how your family actually shows up in this season—energy, noise, and all.
