Best Neighborhoods for Family Photos in Philadelphia
Philadelphia has some of the best neighborhoods for family photos. If you’re planning a photo session in Philadelphia, choosing the right neighborhood can totally shape the feel of your images. Most of my Philly families choose to shoot in their own neighborhood so the photos feel truly personal, but other families live in the suburbs and choose the city for a different change of pace from suburban parks.
As a Philadelphia family photographer, I help families find locations that feel relaxed and true to how they naturally connect- whether that’s a quiet park, a historic street, or a more colorful city setting.
Below are some of the best neighborhoods in Philadelphia for family photos, each offering a slightly different look and energy.
Rittenhouse Square Family Photos
Rittenhouse Square is one of the most classic locations for family photos in Philadelphia. It offers a balance of greenery, architecture, and walkable neighborhood streets, which makes it especially versatile.
I really like how the light is pretty almost any time of day in Rittenhouse. I love the fountain area and using all the greenery on the pathways. After shooting in the square I usually walk with families down other side streets the pace feels a bit more relaxed—especially helpful when photographing young children.
This area works well for families who want:
- A classic Philly city feel
- A mix of park and architectural elements while still downtown

Old City Philadelphia Family Photos
Old City has a different feel- it’s brighter with the white stone more textured, historic, and slightly more editorial. It is my favorite spot in Philadelphia for family photos!
Between white stone pillars and staircases, cobblestone streets, brick facades, and quiet alleyways, this area offers a ton of variety.
It’s a strong fit for families who love a more historic Philly look but still want something a bit different than a traditional park.

Graduate Hospital Family Photos
Graduate Hospital is one of the most underrated neighborhoods for family photos in Philadelphia. It offers a quieter, more residential feel while still giving you that clean, city aesthetic.
With wide sidewalks, classic brick rowhomes, and pretty daytime light bouncing between buildings, this area creates images that feel both refined and relaxed without the crowds of more well-known locations.
I often recommend Graduate Hospital for families who:
- Want a to stay in the city without busy backgrounds
- Have younger children and need a calmer pace
- Are drawn to simple, architectural textures
Because it’s less trafficked than areas like Rittenhouse or Old City, sessions here tend to feel more easygoing—which allows for more natural movement and connection throughout.

Chestnut Hill Family Photography
Chestnut Hill offers a refined residential feel while still being distinctly Philadelphia.
Tree-lined streets, gorgeous historic stone architecture, and pockets of greenery make this a great option for families who want a quieter setting without leaving the city. Chestnut Hill has a quaint vibe and is perfect for families who live nearby. Chestnut Hill is one of the best Philadelphia neighborhoods for family photos, especially in-home photography.

Fairmount Park Family Photos
Fairmount Park is ideal if you’re looking for open space and a more nature-driven setting within Philadelphia.
It allows for movement, play, and a more relaxed session flow- especially helpful for families with multiple children.
I often recommend this area for families who:
- Want room to move and explore
- Prefer a less structured environment
- Are drawn to greenery and softer landscapes
Philadelphia Art Museum Family Photos
The Art Museum area offers some of the most iconic views in Philadelphia, but there are also quieter pockets nearby that work beautifully for family photos.
Just beyond the main steps, you’ll find tree-lined paths, open green space, and softer architectural backdrops that feel more relaxed while still capturing that classic Philadelphia look.
I typically guide families slightly away from the busiest areas to keep the session feeling easy and natural—especially with younger children. Of note, the front steps of the art museum are off limits for family photography, but the side sculpture gardens and river walk make for beautiful areas around the museum to shoot.
This location works well for families who:
- Want a recognizable Philadelphia setting
- Love a mix of architecture and open space
- Prefer a polished, timeless feel
Because of the direction of light in the side garden, I recommend a morning session for the best lighting here!
