A Delaware Family Photographer’s Guide to Beautiful Backdrops for Family Photos
You may be searching for where the best locations are for family photos in Delaware- it is such a tiny state! If you’ve ever wondered where to take your family photos in Delaware, the answer isn’t just about what looks “pretty.” It’s about choosing a location that feels like you- one that allows your family to move, connect, and settle into the kind of moments that don’t feel forced.
As a Delaware family and newborn photographer, I guide every session with both light and connection in mind, because the right setting doesn’t just look good, it shapes how your photos feel.
Below are some of the best locations for family photos in Delaware, each offering a slightly different atmosphere depending on your family’s style.
1. Winterthur Museum & Gardens (Greenville, DE)
Best for: refined, garden-inspired sessions with variety
Winterthur offers one of the most versatile landscapes in Delaware: rolling meadows, soft garden paths, and European-inspired architecture all in one place.
This is often my recommendation for families who want something elevated but still natural and relaxed. The children’s garden makes for an exciting experience for the little ones in your family as they explore and play!

2. Valley Garden Park (Greenville, DE)
Best for: organic, tucked-away nature
This location isn’t as popular as many in the Wilmington area, but it is underrated! Especially convenient for Greenville and Hockessin families, and it has beautiful colors in the fall. Valley Garden Park feels quieter and more intimate than most park locations in Northern DE. Think winding paths, subtle water features, and a slightly more hidden feel.
3. Judge Morris Estate (Newark, DE)
Best for: open fields with a refined, historic touch
This is one of those locations that gives you the best of both worlds—wide open space for movement, paired with a subtle historic backdrop.
It photographs beautifully in the early mornings and golden hour and works especially well for families who want a natural look of tall grasses and meadows, but also some architectural interest.

4. Greenville Country Club (Greenville, DE)
If your family is a member of the Greenville Country Club, it makes a stunning backdrop for family photos in Delaware! Even more fun that just using the garden area is to coordinate a session to document your family playing tennis or golf while you are there!

5. White Clay Creek State Park (Newark, DE)
White Clay Creek gives us a little bit of everything—wooded trails, open fields, and some access to creeks and water play!
It’s ideal for families with kids who want to explore, move, and interact more naturally during the session. Ticks are a big factor here and most state parks in Delaware, so plan accordingly to spray before your session and do a thorough tick-check afterwards!

6.Historic New Castle (New Castle, DE)
Best for: charm, texture, and an editorial feel.
Cobblestone streets and historic architecture create a more structured, styled look.
If you’re drawn to a slightly more vintage aesthetic, this location delivers something completely different from most parks and beaches. I love the Georgetown or Old City Philly appeal of this location!

7. Historic Odessa (Odessa, DE)
Best for: quiet historic charm with a softer, less crowded feel
Odessa has a similar historic feel to New Castle, but with a quieter, more understated atmosphere.
It’s ideal if you love architectural detail but want something that feels more relaxed and less busy.
8. Brandywine Creek State Park (Wilmington, DE)
Best for: golden light and open space
If you love warm light and tall grass, this location delivers that effortless golden-hour look. One of the few locations in Delaware to feature rolling hills!

9. Cape Henlopen State Park (Lewes, DE)
Best for: dunes, texture, and a slightly more elevated coastal feel
Cape Henlopen offers more texture than a traditional beach—dunes, grasses, rock jetties, lighthouse views. There is a lot more variation in landscape that create depth in your images.

10. In-Home Family and Newborn Sessions (Across Delaware)
Best for: meaningful, personal, and completely stress-free
For truly personal family and newborn sessions, the best location is often your own home.
As a Delaware family and newborn photographer, I use natural light and your home environment to create images that feel playful, connected, and honest. At-home sessions work particularly well with lots of young children who feel most comfortable in their own yard, and mutli-generational families.

How to Choose the Right Delaware Photo Session Location for Your Family
Each location creates a distinct tone:
- Gardens (Winterthur): refined, layered
- Open fields (Judge Morris, Brandywine): light-filled and effortless
- Wooded parks (White Clay Creek): natural and interactive
- Historic towns (New Castle, Odessa): structured and editorial
- Beaches (Rehoboth, Cape Henlopen): movement and softness
- Home (family and newborn sessions): personal and meaningful
The goal isn’t just choosing a beautiful place, it’s choosing one that supports how your family naturally connects and what also fits well with your personal aesthetic for framing portraits and displaying them in your home.

Final Thoughts
The best photos don’t happen because everything is perfectly styled or everyone is perfectly behaved.
They happen when your family is given space to move, connect, and settle into the moment—and the location simply supports that.
