Relaxed Beach Sessions at Cape Henlopen State Park
Family photos in Lewes, DE are shaped as much by timing and location as they are by the people in front of the camera.
Most of my Lewes photo sessions take place at Cape Henlopen State Park, where the combination of open shoreline, dunes, and tree cover allows for a range of light depending on the time of day. Most families choose photos at sunrise or sunset, but sometimes children’s schedules dictate a time outside of golden hours. Since there is always pretty light in Cape Henlopen, I even shoot midday for some families that enjoy a brighter full-sun look.
The state park makes a wonderful location for family beach photos, especially if you have small children who need to start the session a little earlier than sunset. I have spent hours in the park finding the best locations for family photography that gets warm sunlight a little earlier in the evening so we can still get that magical sunset golden light that I am known for, without cranky little ones staying up way past their normal bedtime. My favorite kind of light is that soft, filtered light and Cape Henlopen offers plenty of shade and unique greenery than a traditional beach setting.

Extended Family Photos in Lewes, DE
Extended family sessions require a different level of coordination and posing expertise! I have mastered the art of working with large groups, and have a seamless workflow to assure a wide variety of portraits in your gallery. I call my approach “Frameables First“: I always begin with moving through all of the organized groupings—full family, individual families, and any specific combinations that matter most like grandparents and grandkids. This ensures everyone has the posed images they expect before any children have the chance to meltdown. I focus on all poses that involve children first, and any adult-only poses can wait until we are done with the kids.
After we’ve captured the most essential “frameables“, I shift into more guided and playful interactions. Rather than static posing, I give direction that creates movement and connection—walking, splashing, tossing in the air. Some families bring kites to fly, or sand buckets to play with. Your final gallery will always have a hearty mix of posed family groupings and connected candid moments. I want to capture grandparents leading grandbabies to the water, splashing with them, or cousins playing ring-around-the-rosie together in the sand.
During this Lewes session, photographing three generations of women together meant balancing those more structured portraits with time for natural family interaction. Both are important, and both are part of my session framework.

What to Expect from a Lewes Beach Session
Cape Henlopen State Park offers more flexibility than most beach locations in the area.
- Multiple backdrops within close distance (beach, dunes, trees)
- A little bit more flexible lighting scenarios outside of golden hour
- Enough space for even large extended families
Sessions are designed with a clear flow:
- Start with the more posed, structured groupings
- Move into smaller family combinations
- Finish with more relaxed, movement-based images
This keeps my sessions organized even when it feels like we are constantly moving!

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Photos in Lewes, DE
When is the best time for family photos in Lewes, DE?
Most sessions are scheduled in the early morning or in the evening, typically within 1-2 hours of sunrise or sunset. At Cape Henlopen State Park, I often start earlier than traditional golden hour by using areas with filtered light, then transition toward the beach as the light softens.
You can learn more about how sessions are planned and scheduled on my Lewes beach photography page.
What location do you use for beach sessions in Lewes?
The majority of sessions take place at Cape Henlopen State Park. It offers a combination of dunes, shoreline, and tree cover within a short distance, which allows for multiple backdrops without needing to relocate.
How far in advance should we book family photos in Lewes?
For summer and early fall, I recommend booking 2–4 months in advance, especially for evening sessions. Peak weeks fill super quickly due to limited availability (there’s only so many sunsets in summer!) and consistent demand for beach dates.
What should we wear for family photos at the beach?
Clothing should be coordinated rather than matching. I typically recommend:
- Lightweight fabrics that move easily
- A mix of tones instead of all neutral or all identical- coastal colors are timeless and work so well!
- Avoiding large logos or crazy patterns
I always provide specific guidance based on your group energy and taste!

How do you handle large or extended families?
Extended family sessions are planned with structure from the start. I create a clear sequence of posed groupings—full group, individual families, and requested combinations—before moving into more natural interactions. This keeps the session efficient while ensuring all key images are covered.

What happens if it’s windy at the beach?
Wind is expected at the beach and is factored into planning. I adjust positioning, direction of movement, and location within the park to manage it. In many cases, wind adds movement and works in your favor when handled correctly.

What happens if the weather doesn’t look perfect?
Sessions are only rescheduled for significant weather (steady rain or storms). Overcast skies are often ideal for photography, and light cloud cover can improve consistency in your final images.
Is Cape Henlopen crowded for photos?
Certain areas can be busy, especially in peak summer. I plan sessions around timing and location within the park to avoid the most crowded sections and keep the experience moving efficiently.

Can we include dogs in a Cape Henlopen beach photo session?
I love including dogs in family sessions! Dogs are allowed at Cape Henlopen State Park, but access is restricted during peak season. From May through September, dogs are only permitted on specific designated beaches and must be leashed. Outside of peak season, access is more flexible. If you’re hoping to include your dog, I’ll guide you to the appropriate location and timing based on current park regulations.
If you’re hoping to include your dog, I’ll guide you to the appropriate location and timing—and you can find more details about planning your session on my Lewes family photography page.
